Finishing our garden & yard critters

We spent this past weekend finishing up the garden. Kyra was very excited to plant all the vegetables that we had picked out. We all wore our big mud boots. Daddy got the soil ready.Then Kyra handed him all the plants. Once they were planted, she wanted to know if the garden was ready so she could pick the vegetables.

We had to stop because we saw a snapping turtle walking across the yard. She soon called home to one of our dirt piles.

After resting there for quite some time, Todd noticed that she was laying eggs in the dirt. Since the dirt was going to be bull dozed into our yard later in the week, Todd and his helper decided to replant the eggs. Snapping turtles usually lay between 20-30 eggs, our laid 41 (can you imagine!). They take 2-3 months to hatch. Gender is determined by the temperature at which the eggs are maintained during this period. Once the mother lays the eggs, her job is done so off she went. We moved them all to a safer spot. Kyra wanted to touch them, she gets very excited by bugs and things of this nature. They are kind of soft and perfectly round, similar to the size of a ping pong ball.
